Weather and sea conditions can change fast, quickly turning an enjoyable day on the water into a life and death situation.

You can find up-to-date marine information and forecasts for your local area on the Weather Bureau website or app – and on the Marine Rescue App.

Before you head out, be sure to check the following:

Current weather and sea state warnings.

Forecast weather conditions such as fog, storms, high winds, heavy rain, extreme heat or cold.

Will these affect your ability to stay safe on the water?

Are potentially dangerous changes in wind strength or direction forecast?

Are hazardous wave conditions expected?

When are high and low tides – and will these affect your ability to safely cross a bar or make your way through shallow waters?

You need to be sure you and your boat are able to handle the conditions.

Remember to check weather forecasts and marine warnings regularly while you’re on the water as conditions can change quickly and you might need to head for shore early.
