About the Opportunity

MRNSW now has an exciting opportunity for three Zone Commanders to join their teams on the South, Central and North NSW Coasts.

Reporting to the Deputy Commissioner, Operations, you will primarily be responsible for the end-to-end delivery of MRNSW support for waterway users, ensuring staff and member operational preparedness and incident response, engaging with members and stakeholders, and leading a safety culture. 

Some of your core duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Ensure the delivery of operational training covering marine drills, operational readiness inspections, vessel readiness, rosters and coordination and other preparedness and response capabilities, skills and knowledge;
  • Continually improving MRNSW operations and associated services such as by developing, implementing and reviewing policies and procedures for safe and up to date operations, reviewing incident responses and investigating internal incidents, and ensuring post-incident support and welfare services are provided to MRNSW responders;
  • Support MRNSW engagement with the media and stakeholders including providing operational reporting and media comments, building, and maintaining local relationships with key stakeholders, and representing the organisation effectively in a range of contexts; and
  • Work with the Zone Duty Operations Managers and the Zone Training Manager, providing leadership support to Marine Rescue Units and their executives to foster an inclusive culture and safe workplace.

About You

The ideal candidate will have at least five years’ of proven experience in an operational leadership role, ideally within the emergency, marine or rescue space. You will need to have a focus on developing a strong safety culture, setting performance expectations, and providing direction and support to identify and manage workplace health, safety, and wellbeing risks.

You will need to be an effective communicator and have strong interpersonal skills. You will also have to demonstrate strong leadership operational experience, and have strong knowledge in governance and regulatory oversight, and be able to understand risk-based operations and compliance.

In addition, you will need to be able to foster effective working relationships internally and with external organisations and members to ensure collaboration and create buy-in, based on a genuine appreciation and understanding of a volunteer-based community service. They contribute to the MRNSW leadership team by achieving high-quality operational outcomes within budget, ensuring resources are fiscally efficient and fit for purpose.

Please note: As this role requires a lot of travel, you will need to have a valid and current driver’s licence.
