Somewhere in Sydney last night there was a spear fisherman unaware of the chaos that followed his quick trip to Wollongong Harbour yesterday.

According to witness reports, the man entered the water from a rock shelf not far from the little lighthouse about 11am, only to re-emerge about half an hour later, having run into trouble when his gear snagged on rocks.

Unable or unwilling to risk retrieving the gear, he left a bright orange buoy and a spear floating near where he first entered the water, and reportedly walked away.
