- The Entrance responds to amphibious emergency
- July 25, 2012

Members of The Entrance unit of Marine Rescue NSW have put their new rescue vessel TE 20 to the test, towing a seaplane forced to ditch in Tuggerah Lakes to safety.
Unit spokesman Denis O’Mara said the light amphibious plane had developed tail rudder problems when landing on the Lake near Picnic Point, preventing it from manouevring correctly.
The Sydney owner managed to pull the plane up about 200 metres from shore.
“The pilot was assisted by Maritime Services before Darrell Tomkins and Digby Maguire in our new Cobia RHIB arrived to tow him to the Picnic Point boat ramp,” Mr O’Mara said.
“It was there that additional problems were discovered with the front wheel collapsing, making manoeuvring on land also very difficult, a real problem for this amphibious aircraft.”
Mr O’Mara said the plane’s owner, who built the aircraft himself, had organised a trailer to tow it back to its Warnervale base after dismantling the wings for road transport.
“He was so pleased to have the assistance that he showed his appreciation by donating $100 to our unit to cover the cost of our fuel, which was a rare and thoughtful gesture in today’s world,” he said.
