  • Marine Rescue supports open water swimmers
  • May 26, 2012

Marine Rescue Port Jackson has again kept a watchful eye over swimmers in Sydney’s annual South Head Roughwater Swim.

The unit has been providing safety boat support for the 10-kilometre event for 11 years.

The 2012 race, on May 20, drew a record number of solo swimmers and was won by Brad Horrey.

The race is an ocean swim from North Bondi Beach, heading along the coastline and across to South Head, then into Sydney Harbour to the finish at Watsons Bay.

All swimmers or teams must be accompanied by their own support boat for the swim along some of the most exposed coastline in Australia. There is no shelter from the prevailing conditions and those who complete the swim know they have conquered one of the most testing stretches of water on the Australian east coast.

Among this year’s competitors was 61-year-old Murray Cox, who took to the water the day after he swam a three-kilometre leg from the Quarantine Station to Camp Cove to finish a 50-kilometre circuit around Sydney Harbour this summer.

The Port Jackson Unit also has supported Mr Cox by providing safety boats for a number of his swim legs.
