Basic Navigation Courses

Navigation courseThere are no road signs at sea.

Knowing your position on the water is one of the keys to increasing the chances of a swift rescue in the event of an emergency. This information will help rescuers reach a vessel in trouble as quickly and efficiently as possible. If you can tell us where you are, we’re obviously going to be on the scene more quickly than if we have to try to figure out your likely location.

Marine Rescue NSW navigation courses cover a range of topics that will help you find your way around your local - and less familiar - waterways without just relying on your GPS. Topics covered include types of charts, fixing horizontal and vertical sextant angles, plotting positions and running fixes, basic navigation instruments and predicting the height of tides between high and low water.
